NARRATIVE (relating to the particulars of an event or transaction) October 28th Narrative Project Begins October 30th Initial in class discussion of ideas. November 4th Written proposals outlining the content and format of your project are due. November 18th or 20th Final crit of this project will be held over two days.
CONTENT You are asked to tell a story. It can be the history of the world, it can be your story, it can be a story about what happened today: something you witnessed, or something that happened to you personally, it can be an action you or someone else performed, it can be a gesture, it can be a thought, it can, finally, be a premonition of a thought—that difficult to describe feeling of anxiety and anticipation of something to happen. You are asked to tell a story.* You will need to shape a new, unique structure in which to convey your story. The user and the interactions he or she is allowed by the piece should be a key communicative element in your project. You are free to choose any content and format applicable to new media for this project. Macromedia Flash is the expected platform for these projects, but other platforms/media may be possible with approval.
CONSIDERATIONS The following are some questions to study as you develop your project, and in preparation for critique sessions: • How, as an author, can one take advantage of the tensions between the images, words, sounds, and movement coexisting in interactive environments? • What is the relationship between user interactions and the process of communicating/comprehending the message of the work? • What creative strategies can be/are utilized in the process of developing the story? • What are the expressive characteristics of structure in interactive multimedia? • How are the messages communicated through structure/interaction?
PROPOSAL A written proposals outlining the content and format of your project is due on November 4th. This proposal should outline both the basic subject matter of your project as well as a description of the structure and form your project will assume. While the particulars of your project will most likely shift as you build it, the proposal should convey a clear picture of the project as you currently understand it. Include, if applicable, the following: • a diagram of the structure of your project • a description of the imagery you plan to use, and the method for creating your imagery (i.e. photography, pen illustration, digital illustration) • a description of the audio you plan to use • an explanation of the primary user interactions * Adapted from assignment by Piotr Szyhalski
